Summer is the time of year when the Fallon community shines. And this summer we have a full schedule of summer events that show off the local culture, lively arts scene and beautiful landscapes that makes Fallon a great place to live and visit.

The summer events kick off in May with Spring Wings, a celebration of the beautiful bird migration that stops off in the Lahontan Valley every spring. Octane Fest follows in June, delivering a rousing, spectator-friendly display of horsepower and four-wheeling prowess. Also this summer, the Churchill Arts Council will once again produce two free concerts in the park utilizing the Centennial Stage Amphitheater. On June 16, residents and visitors alike will enjoy Red Baraat, a nine-piece, Brooklyn-based New Orleans funk and Latin jazz dance floor band, sure to get people dancing. A second free concert hosted by the city on August 18, will feature Brave Combo, a Grammy-nominated polka party band.

If a little Western flavor is more of your thing, I hope you make it to one of my favorite events — “The Fastest Gun Alive” Cowboy Fast Draw World Championship. This Oct. 4-7, a group of the world’s most talented quick-draw artists will come to Fallon to remind us of the lightning-fast six-shooter skills that are a part of our Western heritage.

Our summer events showcase Fallon’s diverse culture and identity. And they offer local residents and visitors a chance to gather and enjoy our community and our natural beauty.

So as the weather warms, please take a weekend or three to enjoy some of the fantastic Fallon events on the summer schedule. I hope to see you out there.

Ken Tedford Jr.

The City of Fallon is proud to recognize the tireless work, dedication and outstanding professionalism of Dennis Southfield, our city’s employee of the quarter for the first quarter of 2012.

Southfield is an operator at the City of Fallon’s wastewater treatment and water plants, who has worked at the City of Fallon since 1998. He is a long-time Fallon resident and former dairy farmer.

“He is hardworking, dependable and reliable,” said Jim Souba, the City of Fallon Engineer. “He is the type of guy where there is never any argument. He just gets the job done.”

Souba said that Southfield shows up early for every shift and makes the wastewater treatment plant run smoothly.

Southfield said that he enjoys the working environment and camaraderie of working at the City of Fallon.
“There are four guys that I work with, and they all do a good job,” said Southfield. “It is definitely a team effort. We don’t work solo.”

We congratulate Dennis on this well deserved honor. If you see Dennis around town, congratulate him on this recognition. Check back in future editions of the newsletter for next quarter’s outstanding employee.

Jeff’s Digitex Printing’s two new large-format printers are just the next step in the nearly 40-year-old downtown Fallon business’s commitment to evolve with changing technology.

The company, owned by Jeff and Jill Christiansen, started in 1972 in the days of duplicators and mimeograph machines. Today, it offers graphic design, high-quality printing, copying, silk screening, embroidery, and many more services.

Businesses can find a full array of services on state-of-the-art technology at Jeff’s Digitex Printing, allowing them to design and print high-quality business cards, flyers or marketing material.

The new large-format printers allow customers to create large posters in full color on canvass, photo-quality print or paper.
But Jeff’s customers reach far beyond the business community. The silk screening and embroidering services brings in high school sports teams, individuals who want custom hats or T-shirts, and people creating personalized gifts like embroidered towels.
“The customer’s imagination is the only limiting factor,” said Jeff Christiansen.

Christiansen also owns two other businesses that are located in the Jeff’s Digitex Printing building. Susie’s Fallon Picture Framing offers high-quality framing, matting and laminating. Susie has been framing photos for 20 years, and is nationally certified in picture framing. And Spring Valley Rentals offers housing and storage unit rental services in the Fallon area.

The Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) are coming to Fallon, bringing permanent jobs, construction work and a big boost to the local dairy industry with them.

Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford, Jr. recently signed a contract to sell a 31.5 acre parcel in the city’s New River Business Park to the 16,000 member-owned dairy cooperative based in Kansas City, MO. Construction of the $70-million milk processing facility will begin in May with a completion date planned for the summer of 2013.

The Fallon plant is expected to convert nearly 500 million pounds of milk per year into a dry milk powder product for worldwide distribution. This will greatly increase milk demand for local dairy farmers in Churchill, Lyon and Douglas counties, and will initially create 44 permanent plant operator jobs and hundreds of indirect jobs in the region. The plant will be one of only two of its kind in the world, and the first in North or South America.

The dairy plant construction will be the culmination of a lot of economic development work for the city. The city completed the New River Business Park in 2005 to help attract new businesses to the city, and stimulate local economic growth. The dairy plant will occupy a portion of the second phase of the business park.

Fallon welcomes the Dairy Farmers of America to town. And we look forward to the benefits to the Fallon economy that the new facility will bring.
