Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. was recognized as the Person of the Year at the Fallon Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards on Feb. 1, and the City of Fallon received the Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification Award.

Mayor Tedford’s Person of the Year award recognized his leadership as a mayor, community leader and business owner. Tedford has been mayor for nearly 18 years and has tirelessly advocated for Fallon business and has worked hard to maintain and improve resident’s quality of life. He is a champion of the arts bringing free “concerts in the park” to the public every summer. And he has supported education and sports in the community with the Mayor’s Youth Fund. Accessible and earnest, Tedford has been a fulcrum, leveraging city services, contracts and labor to ease the community through these difficult economic times.

The City of Fallon’s Beautification Award highlights the city’s sidewalk improvements, gateway signs and rehabilitation of Oats Park with the installation of over 80,000 square feet of sod. The City of Fallon led an effort to build gateway monuments at the western and southern entrances to the city that include landscaping and LED informational reader boards that will provide timely information to residents and visitors alike. The beautification efforts, led by Mayor Tedford’s belief that a community takes pride in its appearance and that visitors are attracted to attractive communities, are exemplified in “Keep Fallon Green,” a city cleanup week in April.

The Fallon Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards featured local volunteers, local food and local entertainment. A silent auction raised funds for the Fallon/Churchill Volunteer Fire Department.

Live Local Fallon Rewards Local Shoppers

Being born and raised in the tight-knit community of Fallon, one of the things I have come to appreciate is the fact that, in one way or another, we all depend on each other.

Local businesses rely on local customers. Local workers rely on local businesses for employment. Local events rely on local attendees. And local government relies on a healthy business community and engaged local citizens.

Live Local Fallon, a program that launches this spring, is a recognition of this interdependency. It is a program that strengthens the connections between local businesses, local residents, local events, and local government.

Live Local Fallon will give local residents a chance to be rewarded and recognized for their commitment to the local community. The program will distribute passports to all interested local residents. For each local shopping trip, each dinner at a local restaurant, or each trip to a local event, Live Local Participants will collect stamps on their passport.

People who fill their passports with stamps can earn a Live Local jacket, attend annual Live Local banquets, earn a Live Local certificate, and receive recognition in the paper as helping to invigorate the local economy as a “live localer.”

The City of Fallon is currently connecting with five notable keystone businesses to launch the program. Please support Live Local Fallon, and help us build a stronger local economy and a stronger local community.

Stay tuned for more details on this unique local program. And look for Live Local Fallon banners, passports and information at local businesses, the Fallon Chamber of Commerce, and City Hall.

If you are a local business interested in participating in the Live Local Fallon program, contact Rick Gray of the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority at 423-4556, or The Abbi Agency at 323-2977.

For the first quarter of 2013, the City of Fallon has selected Daniel Babiarz, an Explorer with the Fallon Police Department, is the City of Fallon’s selection for employee of the quarter. Daniel began his career in law enforcement as an Explorer with the Fallon Police Department in October 2002 when he was just 14 years old. During his time as an Explorer he documented over 1700 hours doing ride-alongs, working special events and attending training functions.

Daniel graduated from Churchill County High School in 2007. His graduation coincided with an opening for a Police Service Assistant and he started working for the police department on September 16, 2007. As a PSA he became proficient in dispatching, evidence procedures, registering sex offenders, handling bad check cases and many other functions within the police department. While working as a PSA Daniel attended WNC where he earned his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

Daniel’s ultimate goal was to become a police officer and in July 2009 he attended the police academy. Daniel excelled in the academy and was selected by his peers as the top cadet. He graduated from the academy and became our newest officer on November 5, 2009.

Daniel is a loyal, trustworthy, and dependable employee who is always willing to accept additional responsibilities. Daniel is married to Jacquelyne Cross who is an EMT with Banner Churchill Community Hospital.

The Fallon/Churchill Fire Department will be testing fire hydrants during April and May.

During this period of peak fire demand water testing, it is common for water consumers to experience discolored water. The discoloration occurs due to abnormally high flows in the piping system, which can stir up small amounts of naturally occurring sediment. Please understand that although the water may be discolored, it has been properly treated and is entirely safe. If the water is heavily discolored, you may wish to temporarily refrain from drinking or washing clothes. The water discoloration will typically be gone within a few hours after the fire flow testing is completed. After testing is complete, any discolored water in your home can usually be removed by flushing your water pipes for several minutes. It is best to flush cold water from an outdoors hose bib or an interior bathtub fixture.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience that may result from this vitally important fire flow testing of our water system. If you have any further questions, please contact the City Engineer’s office at 423-5107.

May 17-19, 2013

Local birders will have a front-row seat to one of nature’s most impressive migrations when Spring Wings Festival kicks off at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge May 17-19. Spring Wings celebrates the more than 280 species of birds that stop off in the wetlands outside of Fallon as part of a long migration north to summer breeding grounds in Northern Canada and Alaska.

The Spring Wings Festival is held in conjunction with International Migratory Bird Day, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife-recognized celebration of conservation and bird migration. The sheer magnitude of the annual bird migration along the Pacific Flyway is staggering. Millions of birds travel all or part of the way between feeding grounds as far south as Patagonia and breeding grounds as far north as the Arctic tundra. Millions stop in the Lahontan Valley each spring to rest and feed before continuing north.

Guided bird-watching tours will visit Stillwater Wildlife Refuge, which has received national and international recognition as one of North America’s premier bird-watching locations. Other Spring Wings events include family events, educational workshops, craft activities, food and vendors. Parents and children can learn about everything from birds of prey to the ancient history of the Great Basin in interactive presentations featuring live birds and well-known experts.

Spring Wings attendees can choose from various birding-focused guided tours throughout the Lahontan Valley beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Sunday morning. There will be a full day of free educational activities, exhibits and family fun at Churchill County Fairgrounds Municipal Building on Saturday, May 18. All Spring Wings events begin at Churchill County Fairgrounds. For more information about the Spring Wings Festival and to register for tours, go to www.springwings.org.

June 6-9, 2013

Spectators at this year’s Octane Fest will be treated to a brand new event that will have race fans on the edge of their seats. The King of the West Sprint Car races will bring aggressive, high-speed, dirt track mayhem to the Rattlesnake Raceway on Friday and Saturday nights, June 7 and 8.

The sprint cars, outfitted with 410-cubic-inch, 900-horsepower engines, are known for lightning-quick accelerations and top speeds of up to 140 mph. The racers will lap the quarter-mile dirt track at top speeds, drifting around corners, making tight passes and opening the throttle in the straightaways. The action-packed racing makes for spectacular crashes and neck-and-neck, crowd-pleasing finishes.

The King of the West Sprint Car race is part of a circuit of sprint car races that includes stops across northern California. Apart from the sprint car races, Octane Fest will continue to feature fan favorites such as Monster Truck Jamboree and the Lucas Oil Drag Races.
