As we enter 2012, the top topic both nationally and in Fallon continues to be our local economy. At the City of Fallon, economic development has taken a front seat and we are proud to announce several successes from 2011 that will provide jobs and invigorate the local economy in 2012.

As you may have seen, the City of Fallon recently entered into an agreement to bring an $85 million Dairy Farmers of America facility to Fallon, adding dozens of permanent jobs in Fallon while also employing construction workers and supporting dairy farmers throughout the region.

Metal joist manufacturer New Millennium Building Systems also recently re-opened a facility in Fallon that is now employing 58 workers, a number that could triple if the plant expands to full capacity.

Meanwhile, the City of Fallon continues to support our existing local businesses with a full calendar of community events, like the sold-out Tractors and Truffles event that highlights Fallon’s world-class agriculture and the Sierra Youth Football League Experience that brings more than 12,000 visitors to town each year.

The City of Fallon continues to be a wonderful place to live and do business. We are blessed to have new businesses opening their doors in town, and a stable base of long-time Fallon companies that continue to contribute to our local economy and community.

In 2012, the City of Fallon will remain focused on efforts that build the economic health of our local community.

Fall is upon us and the weather is cooling. We begin to bundle up with layers of clothes, surrounding ourselves in warmth. And as we head into the fall and winter holidays, we surround ourselves with family and friends and take comfort in the warmth of our loved ones.

In Fallon, we are an extended family and the City takes pride in the work that makes living in Fallon so rewarding. I hope you will take time to visit City Hall during the open house and Christmas tree lighting the first Friday in December. Enjoy the fall and winter months, and stay warm.

As the mayor of Fallon, I want to welcome you to the City of Fallon’s newsletter. I hope you become a regular reader for city news, updates, and useful information that you can share with family and friends.

Unlike most cities which are chartered by the state legislature, Fallon operates under the Nevada Revised Statutes’ Chapter 266: “General Law for Incorporation of Cities and Towns.” This arrangement allows city officials greater governmental autonomy.

Fallon also has a strong-mayor form of government which means the mayor is the city’s chief executive officer. I work very closely with the three-member City Council, and oversee the city’s utility enterprise funds: electricity, landfill, sanitation, sewer, water and water treatment.

I also oversee the six municipal departments: Police, City Attorney, Emergency Management, City Clerk / Treasurer, Public Works / City Engineering, and Municipal Court.

While my position requires that I be very “hands on” with respect to the city’s day-to-day operations, time must be made to communicate with the citizens of Fallon. I intend for this newsletter to be an extension of the mayor’s role as the city’s chief communicator, connecting Fallon residents to the inner workings of the mayor’s office, the exciting new developments in the community — and all of the reasons why I believe Fallon is the greatest place to raise a family, own a business, and call home.

Whether giving individual grants to young people in need or paying for neighborhood basketball hoops, the City of Fallon, for more than a decade, has benefited the community’s youth via a fund dedicated solely to enhancing their lives.

The Mayor’s Youth Fund provides financial support to qualifying people, programs and projects to improve the younger population’s standard of living and nurture their self-esteem. The trust, created by Mayor Ken Tedford and the Fallon City Council, is funded by charitable donations alone.
