Police Department Functions
Chief
- Supervise all police activities within Fallon
- Oversee all the Police Department divisions
- Respond to media requests when warranted
- Attend the Mayor's weekly Cabinet meetings
- Perform departmental budget assessments
- Maintain and update departmental policies and procedures
- Tend to personnel issues
- Oversee equipment maintenance and upgrades
- Pursue department accreditation
- Organize and supervise staff in emergencies
- Provide the safest working conditions possible for employees
- Maintain safety regulations
- Inform the City Clerk of all permanent personnel changes
- Notify the Mayor of any proposed changes in employee job duties or responsibilities
Officers
- Patrol the streets
- Respond to police and ambulance service calls
- Enforce the Fallon municipal code and Nevada state laws
- Provide security at community events
- Check on citizens with special needs upon request
- Perform home security checks for vacationing residents
- Assist oxygen-dependent residents in emergencies
Detectives
- Investigate all major criminal activity (fraud, robbery, homicide, identify theft, burglary, sex offenses, financial and computer crimes)
- Investigate unattended deaths
- Process crime scenes
- Collect and submit crime scene evidence to the laboratory
- Arrest and support prosecution of persons responsible for committing crimes
- Apprehend fugitives
- Manage the registered sex offender program
Domestic Violence Investigator
- Investigate domestic violence misdemeanor crimes committed within the City
- Conduct follow-up investigations of domestic battery cases
- Provide support to domestic violence victims
- Assist with the application of restraining orders
- Serve as liaison between the courts and the local domestic violence office
Narcotics Investigator
- Investigate people and groups involved in narcotics manufacturing, distribution, use and sales
- Coordinate narcotics enforcement efforts among various law enforcement agencies
School Resource Officer
- Serve as liaison between the police department and the school district
- Interact with students, teachers, school administrators and parents to facilitate conflict resolution and problem solving
- Investigate criminal offenses occurring within the school
- Provide instruction to students regarding safety and responsibility
Dispatchers
- Dispatch calls for service, giving officers up-to-date, accurate information
- Handle public requests and respond to citizens' calls
- Maintain and manage departmental records
- Handle other agencies' requests
- Assist officers as is possible
- Fill in as Police Service Assistants when necessary
Police Service Assistants (PSAs)
- Register sex offenders who move to the City
- Perform fingerprinting services
- Process bad check and found property cases
- Manage and maintain the department's evidence system
- Issue bicycle and dog licenses
- Maintain a list of oxygen-dependent citizens
- Fill in as dispatchers when needed
Animal Control Personnel
- Ensure timely and effective enforcement of pertinent animal-related laws
- Patrol and pick up stray and loose animals
- Investigate dog bite complaints, and quarantine animals
- Feed and care for stray, diseased, injured and unwanted animals in the shelter
- Provide traffic control for school zones, special events and emergencies
- Set up and maintain radar trailers and pole-mounted radar units
