Cantaloupes and other truck farm crops (such as onions, tomatoes and beets) were experimented with in the early years of the Newlands Project. The Heart 'o Gold brand has been going strong since the early twentieth century, and is still celebrated today during the annual Heart o' Gold Cantaloupe Festival.
